Starting this summer, Google Wallet will enable users in select European Union countries to add digital IDs. This expansion includes a new age verification feature developed in collaboration with Sparkasse Bank. Although specific countries have not been disclosed, the process is expected to mirror the existing functionality for adding passports in the UK and US.
To integrate their IDs, users will typically record a video selfie, scan their government-issued identification, and allow Google Wallet to cross-check the information. This enhancement comes as part of Google's ongoing efforts to comply with various age verification laws established since early 2025, particularly in relation to the UK's Online Safety Act.
In addition to these features, Google is improving the checkout experience for EU users. If online retailers support Google Pay for direct transactions, customers can use payment methods stored in their Google Wallet. Furthermore, an update to the Secure Payment Authentication feature allows EU customers to complete purchases using biometric verification, eliminating the need for one-time passcodes or additional identity verification steps.
