Apple has halted sales of its lowest-priced Mac mini, previously available for $599, as demand for memory and storage from the AI sector rises. The remaining models now start at $799 and require a minimum of 512GB of storage. This shift has led to speculation about Apple's strategy, particularly as the Mac mini gained popularity for running local AI applications.
The entry-level Mac mini was introduced in 2024, noted for its performance with the M4 chip, 16GB of RAM, and multiple ports, making it an appealing choice for AI enthusiasts. Apple's CEO, Tim Cook, indicated that both the Mac mini and Mac Studio are experiencing supply challenges due to an unexpected surge in demand for AI capabilities.
Despite Apple's efforts to manage supply issues, the discontinuation of the cheaper Mac mini raises questions about future product offerings. Currently, there is no comparable model available at the previous lower price point, and it remains uncertain when or if Apple will introduce a similar entry-level option again.
