Google has launched the first beta version of its upcoming smartphone operating system, Android 17, on Friday, following a postponed release initially scheduled for Wednesday. This new beta is targeted at developers and early adopters using Pixel devices and emphasizes enhancements in privacy, security, and performance.
Features in Android 17 Beta 1 include an improved Live Updates tool, which now showcases a larger progress bar and more pronounced navigation buttons. This tool, which was introduced in Android 16, is designed to provide users with real-time information on deliveries and travel times. Additionally, the beta will offer new capabilities to enhance Wi-Fi connectivity and support for expanded companion device profiles.
The Canary version of Android 17 is expected to reach the Platform Stability milestone by March, which will include final APIs for developers. A full release is anticipated a few months later, likely around June. This beta rollout comes just ahead of the expected launch of the budget Pixel 10A smartphone next week.
