American Airlines has signed a significant agreement with SpaceX to provide in-flight Wi-Fi using the Starlink satellite network, with installation expected to begin in 2027 across its fleet of over 500 narrowbody aircraft. This partnership is part of a broader trend in commercial aviation, where heavy internet usage for work and entertainment necessitates reliable connectivity.
Starlink is lauded for its high-speed internet capabilities, reportedly achieving speeds nearly double those of its nearest competitor. The system boasts over 10,000 satellites in low Earth orbit, which helps to minimize latency compared to traditional satellite services.
This collaboration marks a significant milestone for SpaceX, which has already established partnerships with other major airlines such as United, Southwest, and Alaska, bringing the total to over 2,300 aircraft equipped with Starlink. However, Delta Air Lines has opted for a different route, selecting an in-flight Wi-Fi solution from Amazon, citing cost advantages and additional streaming content.
The announcement arrives shortly after SpaceX's recent filing for an initial public offering, anticipated to be a record-setting event, potentially raising up to $75 billion. Analysts currently value SpaceX at nearly $2 trillion.
