Amazon is venturing into the smartphone market again, this time with a new initiative dubbed “Transformer.” The project aims to leverage advancements in AI technology, positioning itself as a competitor to established smartphone giants like Apple and Samsung, who hold about 40% of the global market share.
The previous attempt, the Fire Phone, was launched in 2014 and resulted in a significant loss of $170 million after only 14 months on the market. This latest effort is part of Amazon's ZeroOne team, led by J Allard, a former Microsoft executive known for his work on Xbox. The group is tasked with developing innovative gadgets and aims to create a device that integrates seamlessly with Alexa.
While past standalone AI devices have often struggled in the market, Amazon's focus on AI-driven personalization may provide a fresh perspective in a landscape dominated by incremental improvements from existing leaders. Companies like OpenAI and Meta are also exploring this emerging market, indicating a growing interest in AI-oriented technology.
