In a recent incident in the Île-de-France region, two suspects were apprehended after attempting to kidnap the wife of Sébastien Borget, co-founder of The Sandbox. They called an Uber in a bid to escape following an attack that involved five masked accomplices who attempted to force her into a vehicle. Fortunately, neighbors intervened, prompting the attackers to flee.
Local reports indicate that one suspect posed as a delivery driver to lure Borget's wife into opening her home's gate. Police later intercepted the Uber, discovering that the apprehended individuals were carrying a replica handgun, balaclavas, and cable ties. The remaining four suspects continue to evade capture.
This incident is part of a concerning trend highlighted by CertiK, a Web3 security firm, which noted a rise in “wrench attacks” across Europe, particularly in France, since 2025. These attacks often involve amateur criminals recruited through social media platforms, with masterminds operating from abroad. The growing visibility of wealth within the cryptocurrency space is believed to contribute to the increase in such incidents.
