Artificial intelligence is set to transform the travel industry by simplifying the planning process for users of two significant platforms, Rome2Rio and its parent company Omio. These platforms plan to introduce applications powered by OpenAI, providing their collective audience of 900 million weekly users with a seamless way to search and compare various travel options, including trains, buses, flights, and ferries.
Users will be able to inquire about travel routes directly through ChatGPT, allowing for streamlined itinerary planning without the need to visit multiple booking sites. Despite the potential for inaccuracies in AI-generated data, known as "hallucination," the companies assure users that their applications will utilize live data for real travel connections. Naren Shaam, CEO of Omio, emphasized the importance of relying on verified content rather than AI estimates.
Furthermore, the technology aims to enhance user experience by offering real-time updates on travel disruptions and suggesting alternate routes. However, experts express concern that increased reliance on AI may lead to over-tourism in popular areas, as algorithms could guide travelers towards well-trodden paths, potentially diminishing the spontaneity of travel.
