The semiconductor manufacturing equipment market is anticipated to grow significantly, projected to reach $134.21 billion by 2026, up from $122.22 billion in the previous year. In response to the evolving demands of artificial intelligence systems, Synopsys has formed a strategic partnership with Lightmatter, announced on Tuesday, to create advanced AI infrastructure. The collaboration will focus on merging semiconductor technology with optical data transmission to overcome existing performance limitations in AI.
This initiative aims to improve data transfer speeds and energy efficiency, addressing critical challenges in contemporary AI development. Synopsys intends to integrate its 224G SerDes and UCIe IP for 3-nanometer processes into Lightmatter’s Passage™ platform, which embeds optical components within chip packages. The technical integration is expected to enhance data transmission between AI accelerators while reducing latency.
The move follows Synopsys's recent divestiture of its Processor IP business to GlobalFoundries, allowing the company to concentrate on software tools and intellectual property for advanced chip designs. This partnership is anticipated to reduce design risks for chip developers and accelerate their time-to-market in a rapidly evolving landscape.
