Microsoft is witnessing a transformative evolution in team structures due to advances in artificial intelligence, according to CEO Satya Nadella. Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, he highlighted a significant change at LinkedIn, where design, program management, product management, and front-end engineering roles have merged into a new position called full-stack builders. This shift marks what Nadella calls the most substantial structural change in software teams since he joined Microsoft in the 1990s.
During a conversation with former UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Nadella introduced his own metaphor for the era of AI, stating, “All of us are going to be managers of infinite minds.” He noted that this reflects the growing role of AI agents, which are designed to autonomously handle tasks and problems, reshaping how future jobs will function.
He emphasized that while young individuals may not manage large teams at a young age, they will increasingly supervise AI agents. Nadella concluded his remarks by suggesting that the “jobs of the future are here,” but their distribution is uneven, echoing sentiments often associated with sci-fi writer William Gibson.
