The study discusses three key methods for media authentication: provenance metadata, imperceptible watermarking, and soft-hash fingerprinting. It posits that combining secure signing with watermarking could enhance validation efforts, while recognizing the limited scalability of fingerprinting for verification purposes. The report warns of potential “sociotechnical provenance attacks” that could mislead users, calling for hardware-based secure enclaves in media capture devices.
