Google has introduced the Gemma 4 12B model along with the Google AI Edge Gallery for Mac, expanding its suite of local AI tools. This launch includes the Google AI Edge Eloquent dictation app, enhancing the capabilities available for users on macOS.
Unlike cloud-based models such as ChatGPT and Claude, local models like those provided by Google offer significant advantages. They do not depend on an internet connection and maintain user privacy since data remains on the device. Furthermore, performance can improve with better hardware, enabling faster response times.
The AI Edge Gallery for Mac currently supports five of Google’s proprietary models, specifically designed to respond to user instructions. These include the Gemma-4-12B-it and others in the Gemma series, which aim to deliver advanced artificial intelligence directly to personal computers.
For users interested in local models, installation options include platforms like Ollama and LM Studio, which provide access to a variety of models hosted by Hugging Face and others.
