Improvements are on the horizon for Apple’s image generation capabilities, specifically for the Genmoji and Image Playground applications. These enhancements aim to significantly elevate visual quality, which has faced criticism since their launch with iOS 18.2.
Mark Gurman reported that the revamped models will not only enhance the performance of existing features but will also introduce third-party AI support for image creation. This includes potential integration of models beyond OpenAI’s ChatGPT, suggesting a broader range of capabilities in the redesigned Image Playground app, expected in iOS 27.
Despite the initial underwhelming performance of Image Playground, particularly in comparison to other tools, the updates promise a substantial upgrade in image fidelity. Although it remains uncertain if these models will continue to operate directly on devices, Apple’s commitment to improving its in-house technology indicates a focused effort on refining user experience.
