DoorDash has launched a new app called “Tasks,” allowing couriers to earn money through various activities that contribute to enhancing artificial intelligence and robotics. This initiative will enable couriers to partake in tasks such as filming their daily routines or recording themselves speaking different languages, with compensation determined based on task complexity and effort.
According to a blog post from the company, the data collected will aid AI and robotic systems in better understanding the physical world. The app aims to improve operational efficiencies, reflecting a broader trend among delivery companies leveraging gig workers for AI training. This follows similar efforts by other companies, including Uber, which has sought to utilize drivers in ways that support AI development.
Specific examples of tasks available include capturing footage of washing dishes and photographing restaurant menus. Additionally, couriers may assist in closing the doors of self-driving vehicles in partnership with Waymo. Ethan Beatty, General Manager of DoorDash Tasks, noted that the app is designed to provide businesses with valuable operational insights while creating flexible earning opportunities for couriers.
