Apple's ongoing collaboration with Google involves enhanced access to Google's AI capabilities, particularly the Gemini model. Reportedly, this partnership offers Apple greater autonomy than initially anticipated, allowing the tech giant to harness Gemini's technology within its own data centers.
Through this arrangement, Apple can create smaller, specialized models that operate efficiently on its devices, streamlining tasks and improving performance. This process, known as "distillation," enables the transfer of knowledge from larger models to more compact versions, which can execute tasks with reduced computing power.
Despite the advancements, challenges remain as Apple’s objectives for Siri may not always align with the strengths of Gemini. The report also notes that Apple’s Foundation Models team continues to explore in-house development, although their current objectives are unclear. Significant updates to Siri, including capabilities for remembering past conversations and proactive suggestions for avoiding traffic, are expected to be revealed at WWDC in June.
