The UK government is actively pursuing a strategy to encourage Anthropic, a prominent AI company based in San Francisco, to establish a larger presence in London. Proposals being considered by the UK's Department for Science, Innovation and Technology include not only an office expansion but also a potential dual stock listing for the company. This initiative comes amid ongoing disputes between Anthropic and the US Department of Defense.
Earlier this year, the relationship between Anthropic and the Defense Department soured when the AI firm refused to alter its stance on specific AI regulations, leading to the cancellation of a contract and a designation of supply chain risk against the company. Although a court has temporarily blocked this designation, tensions remain. Reports indicate that the UK's outreach efforts to Anthropic have intensified as a result of these conflicts.
Looking ahead, Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, is anticipated to visit the UK in May. However, the company will face competition from OpenAI, which has already announced plans for expansion in London earlier this year.
