Users of Google Maps have recently reported significant changes in the app's functionality for those who are not signed into their Google accounts. This alteration restricts access to various features, such as user reviews and images, which are fundamental components of the app's utility. A “limited view” mode now activates, which users have observed over the past week on platforms like Reddit.
In this limited mode, essential information about locations is greatly reduced. For instance, while a signed-in user can view nearby hotels, rentals, and user-generated content when looking at a State Park in North Carolina, the signed-out version omits much of this data. Similarly, restaurant listings still provide basic information like address and hours, but lack reviews, menus, and popular times, significantly detracting from the overall user experience.
Google has indicated that this limited experience might occur due to network issues or browser extensions, suggesting that signing in could restore full functionality. However, the company has not yet made any formal announcement regarding this change.
