Only 4% of creators on Patreon continue to utilize the platform's legacy billing system, as the majority have transitioned to the new method. Apple has recently extended the deadline for this transition to November 1, 2026, providing more time for creators to comply with the requirement to adopt the App Store's in-app purchase system for transactions made on iPhones and iPads.
Initially, the deadline was set for November 2025, with non-compliance risking removal from the App Store. Apple views the payments made to creators on Patreon as digital goods, which entitles them to a 30% commission on in-app purchases, reduced to 15% for ongoing subscriptions exceeding a year. Creators have the option to either adjust their prices within the iOS app to account for these fees or maintain consistent pricing across all platforms.
Despite the changes, Patreon expressed disappointment regarding Apple's handling of this policy, emphasizing the implications for content creators. Additionally, users can bypass the App Store's commission by making payments directly through Patreon's website.
