On Saturday morning, cell phones in multiple Brazilian states received an alarming unauthorized message that included the term misanthropy, suggesting a possible hacking incident, according to Brazilian officials. The alert, categorized as extreme, was first reported in the southern state of Paraná before spreading to major urban centers such as São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.
Authorities confirmed that the National Civil Defense's warning platform was taken offline following the incident, which involved a message generated outside the official system. The peculiar spelling of "misanthropy," using the number '4' instead of the letter 'a,' is indicative of hacking practices known as "leetspeak."
Brazil's National Civil Defense stated that the message was not authorized by any of its agents and that no events warranted the issuance of such an alert. In response to the breach, the government is working to restore the warning system after ensuring all security measures are in place, collaborating with the National Telecommunications Agency and other relevant entities to trace the source of the malicious alert.
