Meta has accused NSO Group of violating a federal court order by continuing to target WhatsApp users. This allegation follows a recent disruption of a phishing attempt that was linked to NSO, which has been embroiled in legal disputes with Meta since 2019.
In a previous ruling, a jury awarded Meta $167 million in damages for NSO's actions against human rights advocates and journalists, although this amount was later reduced to $4 million. The court also issued a permanent injunction prohibiting NSO from engaging in activities against WhatsApp users.
Meta's latest report indicates that the phishing campaign aimed at fewer than 10 users, primarily located in Jordan and Lebanon. Thankfully, Meta stated that there were no indications of compromise among these targeted individuals. The company has disclosed the suspicious domains used in this campaign to help users verify their security on WhatsApp and other platforms.
Meta has reached out to NSO Group for a response regarding these allegations and will provide updates as available.
