XU ZEWEI, a Chinese national, has been extradited to the United States to face serious charges related to his involvement in extensive computer hacking activities. His indictment, announced in a Houston federal court, includes nine counts linked to intrusions that targeted various U.S. entities from February 2020 to June 2021.
The hacking campaign, which is believed to be associated with the HAFNIUM group, affected numerous computers globally, compromising critical systems in the U.S. Notably, these intrusions included attempts to access vital COVID-19 research during the pandemic. Xu is not alone in facing allegations, as he has been charged alongside another individual, Zhang Yu, also a Chinese citizen.
Documents reveal that Xu was directed by the Shanghai State Security Bureau, part of the Ministry of State Security of the People's Republic of China, to conduct these cyberattacks. His employment with Shanghai Powerock Network linked him to a series of companies that allegedly facilitated hacking activities for the Chinese government. U.S. officials emphasize their commitment to combating such cyber threats to protect American businesses and research institutions.
