Following a cyberattack on its parent company, Instructure, the online learning platform Canvas experienced an outage that led to significant disruptions for educational institutions in Illinois. As a result, the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign announced the postponement of all final exams and assignments scheduled over the weekend, impacting many students.
Canvas, widely used by thousands of K-12 districts and colleges, went offline after the company detected unauthorized activity related to a data breach that exposed sensitive information, including users’ names and email addresses. Although the platform was restored on Friday, some institutions remain cautious about its use.
A hacking group called ShinyHunters claimed responsibility for the breach and threatened to release a vast amount of private messages unless their ransom demands are met by May 12. Meanwhile, officials from Illinois State University are still assessing whether any data related to their Canvas courses was compromised.
Northwestern University has suggested alternative methods for professors to communicate with students and manage assignments during the downtime, as many institutions work to ensure the security of their online learning environments.
