A new malware strain, dubbed WeedHack, has been linked to over 116,000 infections since January 2026, according to cybersecurity firm McAfee. This malicious software is camouflaged as Minecraft launchers and mods, primarily targeting young gamers who are eager to enhance their gaming experience.
Each day, between 2,000 and 3,000 individuals fall victim to this malware, which is disseminated via YouTube. Hackers create appealing videos that entice users to download seemingly harmless mods, only to infect their devices with the software. The free version of WeedHack enables attackers to capture Minecraft session IDs and compromise accounts on platforms like Discord and Steam.
Moreover, a premium version of the malware grants hackers extensive control over infected computers, including the ability to access screens, record keystrokes, and utilize webcams covertly. McAfee advises users to avoid engaging with these hackers and to report incidents to law enforcement. The alarming trend also reveals that many perpetrators are teenagers who use the tool for harassment and bullying.
