A cyberattack on Instructure, the provider of the Canvas learning management system, has impacted nearly 9,000 schools globally, causing disruptions as students prepare for finals. The hacking group ShinyHunters has claimed responsibility for the breach, which has compromised billions of private messages and records, according to Luke Connolly, a threat analyst with Emisoft.
Students and parents have been alerted as universities and school districts scramble to manage the fallout. The University of Iowa characterized the incident as a national-level cybersecurity issue, while Virginia Tech acknowledged the attack's influence on final exam schedules. Instructure has yet to comment on whether the system outage was precautionary or a result of the hackers' actions.
ShinyHunters, described as a loose network of young adults based in the U.S. and the U.K., has a history of similar attacks, including one on Ticketmaster. The group had threatened to leak data, with deadlines set for Thursday and May 12, indicating ongoing negotiations regarding potential extortion payments.
