Amazon has decided to discontinue its partnership with Flock Safety, a company focused on automated surveillance technologies. This decision follows public criticism regarding the potential use of Ring doorbells in a neighborhood-wide surveillance initiative. The cancellation comes after a thorough review indicated that the integration with Community Requests would demand more resources and time than originally expected.
The initial collaboration aimed to enable police to request video footage from Ring owners, which sparked privacy concerns among users. The plan was revealed in October 2025, but faced backlash when a Super Bowl advertisement highlighted the Ring Search Party feature intended to locate lost dogs. Critics expressed fears that this technology could be adapted for tracking individuals, including undocumented immigrants or suspected criminals, exacerbating existing privacy issues.
Flock Safety's license plate database has been reportedly utilized by ICE for immigration enforcement, raising further alarm about the implications of such surveillance technologies. Amazon’s retraction reflects a growing awareness of the privacy ramifications associated with its products and partnerships.
