In a recent survey conducted by LevelBlue, a private cybersecurity firm, it was found that 29% of state, local, and educational organizations experienced cyber breaches within the past year. The study, which involved 200 public-sector technology leaders, highlighted a troubling disparity between escalating cyber threats and the ability of these entities to effectively counter them. Notably, 46% of respondents reported an increase in the frequency of cyberattacks.
Kory Daniels, who serves as LevelBlue’s global chief security and trust officer, indicated that the actual number of security incidents might be even greater, as many go unreported. The survey also raised alarm over the rise of AI-driven attacks, with 45% of participants expecting such threats, yet only 28% felt adequately prepared to face them. The rapid adoption of new technologies by public agencies has expanded the potential entry points for attacks, making it harder for employees to differentiate between legitimate communications and AI-enhanced phishing attempts.
Furthermore, 44% of agencies acknowledged a lack of comprehensive visibility into their systems and vendor partners, which poses significant security risks. This vulnerability is especially concerning as attackers often exploit trusted vendors to bypass defenses. To combat these challenges, the report recommends enhancing leadership involvement, improving visibility within vendor networks, and providing ongoing training for staff to strengthen overall cybersecurity measures.
