In a bid to enhance security, Apple is working on a feature that could lock an iPhone when it is forcibly taken. The proposed functionality relies on the device's gyroscope and accelerometer, among other sensors, to detect sudden movements indicating theft.
This feature will also utilize a paired Apple Watch to identify when the iPhone is moved away from the owner's wrist. Upon detecting such a scenario, the iPhone will immediately lock and activate Stolen Device Protection, which adds layers of security to safeguard personal information.
Stolen Device Protection requires biometric authentication for accessing sensitive data such as passwords and credit card information, and it introduces delays for changing account passwords. This initiative aims to counteract theft scenarios where criminals observe users entering their passcodes before stealing their devices.
Currently, there is no timeline for when this feature will be available for iPhone users, although similar capabilities exist in Android devices.
