The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (In-CERT) has released a critical advisory concerning the escalating threats posed by advancements in artificial intelligence (AI). Cybercriminals are now able to exploit AI technologies to conduct attacks with unprecedented efficiency and speed, posing significant risks to businesses, especially micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in India.
In-CERT indicates that modern AI tools enable attackers to scan extensive source code quickly, identifying vulnerabilities including zero-day flaws. This capability allows for the chaining of multiple exploits across networks, making it easier for attackers to breach systems. As a result, the time and expertise needed to perform complex cyberattacks have drastically diminished.
The advisory warns that without urgent enhancements to cybersecurity measures, MSMEs are at heightened risk of severe data breaches and ransomware incidents. In-CERT suggests essential actions such as deploying threat detection tools, continuous network monitoring, and stringent patch management to mitigate these risks. The agency emphasizes that timely software updates are crucial, as AI tools can swiftly exploit unaddressed vulnerabilities.
