In a significant security breach, hackers accessed approximately 34,000 Instagram accounts, with around 20,000 of them compromised. The incident, which involved a flaw in a Meta customer service tool, allowed unauthorized users to reset passwords through an artificial-intelligence chatbot. This vulnerability reportedly impacted various high-profile accounts, including that of a senior official in the Space Force and the home security company SimpliSafe.
Among the affected accounts, hackers posted unusual content, including messages critical of President Trump and pro-Iran sentiments. The breach not only allowed for account takeovers but also exposed sensitive personal information such as email addresses, phone numbers, and birth dates. Internal documents from Meta revealed that over 3,500 accounts had their usernames altered.
Meta has since announced that they have addressed the security issue and have secured the accounts involved. However, the company stated they could not ascertain the full extent of the data accessed or stolen during the breach.
