Despite Meta's assurances of resolving a hacking issue, reports of compromised Instagram accounts persist, with numerous users claiming unauthorized access over the weekend. Hackers are reportedly exploiting Meta’s AI chatbot by falsely claiming ownership of accounts and requesting linkages to their own emails, enabling them to reset passwords and seize control.
Among the accounts targeted were those associated with notable figures, such as John Bentivegna, the U.S. Space Force's chief master sergeant, and a dormant account linked to the Obama White House. Many victims reported losing unique Instagram handles, which can have significant market value as collectibles.
While Meta's spokesperson, Andy Stone, stated that the issue was resolved, new complaints from users emerged shortly after, indicating that the vulnerability may still be present. Discussions among hackers on Telegram suggest that the method is still being utilized to exploit the chatbot, with some accounts allegedly being offered for sale.
