An Iranian hacking group named Handala claims to have breached FBI-operated drones, raising security concerns ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The group alleges it gained access to sensitive data from first-person view drones utilized by the FBI, including images and intelligence from counterterrorism missions, according to the SITE Intelligence Group.
Handala issued a warning regarding World Cup security, suggesting that the presence of their drones could pose a threat to certain teams. The FBI is currently implementing security measures at World Cup venues, restricting unauthorized drone flights around stadiums and fan events. Matches for the tournament commenced on June 11.
Despite the claims, SITE has expressed skepticism, noting that some evidence presented by Handala may not be relevant. Additionally, the U.S. Justice Department has cautioned about potential cyber threats from Iranian groups in light of recent geopolitical tensions. The State Department is offering up to $10 million for information leading to the identification of Handala's members.
