Cybercrime was a focal point at Connell Co-op College in Manchester, where two former hackers shared their experiences with students. The discussion aimed to dissuade young talents from pursuing illegal online activities, highlighting the chaotic realities behind the allure of cybercrime.
Conor Freeman, 26, who was imprisoned for nearly three years in 2020 for his involvement in a $2 million cryptocurrency theft, emphasized the dangers of the hacker lifestyle. He recounted how he was introduced to the cybercrime community, known as The Com, through online gaming, specifically Minecraft, which led him to darker paths on the internet.
The event, supported by the Co-op following a significant hack in April 2022, aimed to channel the skills of young gamers into positive avenues. The Co-op has partnered with The Hacking Games, a startup focused on recruiting talented individuals to enhance corporate cybersecurity measures. This initiative encourages aspiring hackers to employ their skills for constructive purposes rather than illicit activities.
