The U.S. Department of Justice is pursuing the identities and personal data of over 100,000 users of the EZ Lynk car app, which is linked to alleged violations of the Clean Air Act. Subpoenas were issued to major companies including Google, Apple, Amazon, and Walmart in March and April, as part of an ongoing investigation into the company.
EZ Lynk has faced legal action since 2021 for allegedly producing devices that circumvent emissions controls, posing risks to public health. U.S. Attorney Audrey Strauss emphasized the importance of emissions controls in protecting against air pollution. The DOJ aims to identify witnesses who can provide testimony regarding their experiences with EZ Lynk’s products.
EZ Lynk has contested the DOJ's demands, arguing that the request for extensive personal information raises significant privacy issues and exceeds the requirements of the case. The company's legal team stated that not all users need to be identified for the investigation. Additionally, it was mentioned that both Google and Apple are likely to challenge the subpoenas.
