Cal Water, a significant water utility in California serving nearly 500,000 customer connections, is currently investigating a potential cyberattack. The incident has been attributed to a group linked to Iran, named Handala, which claimed to have breached the company’s systems. Although the hackers displayed evidence, such as a customer bill, they did not proceed to disrupt water supply.
In response to the threat, Cal Water stated that there are currently no operational disruptions affecting its water or wastewater services, including the billing platform. The company emphasized its commitment to cybersecurity and maintaining the integrity of its water systems. Republican Congressman Vince Fong labeled the event a "wake-up call," signaling that adversaries are increasingly targeting essential infrastructure.
The cyberattack is reportedly connected to rising tensions in the Middle East, particularly following U.S. military actions that occurred on June 10. While Iranian state media linked the hack to these strikes, Cal Water is in contact with the Department of Homeland Security to ensure comprehensive security measures are in place.
