Apple's latest firmware update, version 1B211, for the Beats Studio Buds addresses a critical security flaw that could allow an attacker to eavesdrop via the device's microphone. The vulnerability, identified as CVE-2025-20701, pertains to unpaired devices actively searching for pairing requests, according to Apple's support documentation.
In conjunction with this release, Apple also updated the AirPods lineup with firmware version 8.1.41, which includes the AirPods Pro 3, AirPods Pro 2 (USB-C), and the AirPods Pro (2nd generation). However, the AirPods updates only provide general bug fixes and enhancements without any specific security mentions.
For users of the Beats Studio Buds, the firmware update cannot be manually triggered. Instead, users should ensure their devices are running the latest version of iOS, iPadOS, or macOS and are connected to Wi-Fi. Following a series of steps involving charging the Beats and keeping them within Bluetooth range of the paired device will allow the firmware to update automatically within approximately 30 minutes.
