The sequel M3GAN 2.0 faced a disappointing box office performance, only generating $39 million globally against a production budget ranging from $15 million to $25 million. This outcome starkly contrasts with the success of its predecessor, M3GAN, which earned $181 million from a mere $12 million budget.
Released in June 2025, M3GAN 2.0 aimed to pivot the character M3GAN into a heroic role against a new AI antagonist named AMELIA (Ivanna Sakhno). Despite high expectations from Universal and Blumhouse, the film underperformed commercially. CEO Jason Blum acknowledged the misstep in transforming M3GAN into an action-driven narrative rather than maintaining the original's horror-comedy blend.
In contrast, since its Netflix debut on January 26, M3GAN 2.0 has ascended to the top of the streaming service's U.S. Top 10 chart, indicating a shift in its reception post-theatrical release. Meanwhile, the top three films dominating the global box office in 2025 included Ne Zha 2 with $2.2 billion, Zootopia 2 at $1.7 billion, and Avatar: Fire and Ash at $1.4 billion.
