A significant reduction in workforce at Meta's Reality Labs has led to disruptions within its virtual reality division, impacting various game developers. Among those affected is the Bellevue, Washington-based studio Camouflaj, which has seen its staff diminished to a mere “handful” of employees, down from approximately 30, as confirmed by multiple sources.
This wave of layoffs comes as part of a broader strategy at Meta, which has decided to pivot from its focus on virtual reality and the Metaverse to concentrate on artificial intelligence and wearable technology. The recent job cuts also include the closure of other studios, such as Twisted Pixel and Armature, both situated in Texas.
Furthermore, a sequel to the anticipated Batman: Arkham Shadow has been cancelled, and its developer, Sanzaru, has been shut down. Following these events, inquiries have been made to both Meta and Camouflaj for additional insights.
