Disney+ is set to revive the beloved series Animorphs, originally written by K.A. Applegate, with a new television adaptation currently in early development. Ryan Coogler, known for his work in the film industry, will executive produce through his company, Proximity Media. Bryan Wolcott, recognized for his involvement in The Testaments, will take on the roles of writer and executive producer for the project.
The original Animorphs series debuted in 1996 and spanned 54 books, following five teenagers who could transform into any animal they touched. Their mission involved thwarting the invasion of Earth by the mind-controlling alien race known as the Yeerks. The series concluded in 2001 and gained acclaim for its unique storytelling and striking cover art.
Previously, a feature film adaptation was in development in 2020 but did not progress, leading to this new television opportunity. Although Applegate and her co-creator, Michael Grant, were not involved in the earlier adaptations, their participation in this new project remains uncertain. Disney continues to adapt popular children's literature from the 90s and 2000s, with other projects such as a Percy Jackson series and a show based on Eragon also in the pipeline.
