In March, an update will introduce a new version of the upscaling technology known as PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) for the PS5 Pro. This enhancement aims to significantly improve the visual fidelity of games while maintaining high framerates. Mark Cerny, the lead architect behind the PS5, detailed these advancements in a recent blog post.
One of the first titles to utilize the upgraded PSSR is Resident Evil Requiem. Masaru Ijuin from Capcom highlighted how the improved technology allows for intricate details, such as realistic hair movement and light interaction, enhancing the overall gaming experience. The upgraded PSSR processes complex textures more effectively, which previously posed challenges in upscaling.
Looking ahead, Sony and AMD are set to unveil "Project Amethyst" in 2024, a collaboration focused on developing machine-learning technology to further enhance graphics and gameplay. This partnership has already proven beneficial, as improvements originally developed by Sony for AMD's FSR 4 are being integrated back into the PS5 Pro.
