A new puzzle format, the Midi Crossword, has been introduced by the New York Times this week, filling a gap for those seeking a challenge between the quick Mini Crossword and the more extensive original puzzle. This mid-sized crossword typically features a 9-by-9 grid, although it can expand to 11-by-11 in some instances, offering more complexity with its clues.
Available exclusively for New York Times Games subscribers, the Midi Crossword can be accessed through the app on iOS and Android devices as well as on mobile and desktop web browsers. Notably, it is not included in the print edition of the newspaper. Ian Livengood, the Puzzle Editor, highlighted the digital-first approach of the new puzzle, which will incorporate visual effects on a weekly basis.
Each Midi Crossword is themed, providing hints about the clues and answers. Players can expect some unique elements, such as the potential inclusion of two-letter words and repeated answers. This addition is anticipated to engage puzzlers who find the Mini too simple yet are not ready for the extensive original crossword.
