Sony has announced the impending closure of Bluepoint Games, the studio renowned for its remakes of popular titles such as Shadow of the Colossus and Demon's Souls. As part of this decision, approximately 70 employees will be laid off, with the shutdown scheduled for March 2025. This move follows a recent business review conducted by Sony.
Bluepoint Games was acquired by Sony in 2021, with expectations that their expertise in remastering classic games would bolster the PlayStation portfolio. Their last significant contribution was to God of War: Ragnarok in 2022, developed alongside Sony Santa Monica. After this project, Bluepoint was reportedly assigned to create a live-service game within the God of War universe, which has since been canceled.
This closure aligns with Sony's broader challenges in the live-service sector, including the quick shutdown of multiplayer shooter Concord shortly after its launch and the closure of Firewalk Studios, which was developing a related title. Sony continues to explore live-service options, with future projects planned from other studios like Guerilla Games and Bungie.
