HBO is collaborating with Hasbro to produce a new television series based on Baldur’s Gate, which will follow the narrative established in Larian Studios' recent game, Baldur’s Gate 3. The show will be set immediately after the game’s events, which received widespread acclaim upon its 2023 release.
Craig Mazin, known for his work on HBO’s adaptation of The Last of Us, will take on multiple roles including creator, writer, and executive producer. He will be joined by executive producers Jacqueline Lesko, Cecil O’Connor, and Gabriel Marano from Hasbro Entertainment. Chris Perkins, formerly a senior story designer for Dungeons & Dragons, will consult on the series.
Despite the success of the game, which featured a diverse cast of characters uniting against the Cult of the Absolute, Hasbro has faced difficulties in leveraging this popularity beyond merchandise. The upcoming series will need to address various challenges, including the established fan favorites from the game and the impact of player choices on the storyline.
