Wear OS 6.1 was released by Google today but is not yet available on any smartwatches. This update is based on a Quarterly Platform Release of Android 16 (API level 36.1), specifically the QPR2 version that was issued in December. The last update prior to this was Wear OS 5.1, which was launched in November 2024.
One of the notable features of Wear OS 6.1 includes automatic time zone adjustments determined by the user's geographical location, aiding in maintaining accurate time while traveling. Users can manage this setting via Settings > Date & Time > Use location. Additionally, the update enhances experiences for children using supervised accounts, allowing them to transition to non-supervised accounts upon reaching the age of consent.
Furthermore, the new version improves reauthentication support, enabling users to validate their Google Account directly on their smartwatch, avoiding the need for a factory reset when account details change. Currently, the update is available in the emulator for Android Studio, with expectations for deployment on the Pixel Watch in the upcoming quarterly update.
