The launch of the first IKE Smart City digital kiosk took place on Tuesday at a bustling Seattle intersection, marking a significant step in the city's modernization of wayfinding services. Located at First Avenue and Pike Street, this kiosk is part of a broader initiative to install a total of 50 such devices across the city.
Jon Scholes, the president and CEO of the Downtown Seattle Association, participated in the ceremonial unveiling alongside various city officials and representatives from Orange Barrel Media, the kiosks' developer based in Columbus, Ohio. The installation of these kiosks, designed to provide crucial information typically accessed via smartphones, aims to enhance navigation for residents and tourists alike.
The kiosks, which measure over 8 feet in height and include a large touchscreen, allow users to view maps, restaurant listings, transit options, and more. Each unit also offers free public Wi-Fi and connects to the Seamless Seattle program for real-time navigation. The first phase will see 30 kiosks installed in the downtown area, with an additional 20 to follow in other neighborhoods including West Seattle and Ballard.
