IKEA's latest smart home devices are transitioning to Matter over Thread, but some products continue to support the older Zigbee protocol. Users have reported on Reddit about compatibility issues with certain items within the new lineup, particularly the Kajplats bulbs and Bilresa remote. These devices can function using Zigbee, allowing integration with platforms like Home Assistant.
The Kajplats bulbs require six power cycles to switch to Matter pairing mode, while twelve cycles enable Zigbee pairing. Similarly, the Bilresa remote can connect via Touchlink after four button presses, but requires eight for Zigbee pairing. Discussions on Reddit have highlighted successful integrations using Zigbee Home Automation (ZHA) and Zigbee2MQTT (Z2M) within these devices.
Although support for future versions of ZHA and updates for Z2M are anticipated, it remains uncertain if IKEA's new smart plugs, known as Grillplats, will also feature Zigbee compatibility. Currently, many of IKEA's sensors appear to be limited to Matter over Thread, particularly the new Myggspray sensor.
