The latest update for the Google TV Streamer has been released, enhancing its functionality as a hub for smart home devices. This June 2026 update introduces support for Thread 1.4, a networking protocol designed for efficient connections among Internet of Things (IoT) devices.
Originally launched with Thread capabilities, the Google TV Streamer now includes new features like network credential sharing through QR codes. Users can easily add devices to their Thread network by scanning a QR code or manually entering a sharing code, with added security measures such as identity confirmation via PIN or mobile prompts.
Aside from the credential sharing feature, Thread 1.4 also standardizes connections to cloud services through a border router and improves the integration of Ethernet and Wi-Fi alongside Thread networking. Walmart’s pricing for Google TV sets starts at $250, further expanding the accessibility of this technology.
