Plex has begun updating its app for Amazon Fire TV, introducing several enhancements alongside new subscription requirements for remote streaming. Users now need either a Plex Pass, priced at $7 monthly or $70 annually, or a Remote Watch Pass, which costs $2 per month or $20 per year, to access features previously available for free.
The rollout of these changes started on March 23rd for consoles and other TV operating systems, such as LG and Samsung, and is set to extend across all TV platforms by the end of 2026. While the app redesign includes improved navigation and centralized account management, some features, like photo libraries, are currently unavailable.
This policy change has faced backlash from users who are frustrated by the shift to a subscription model for remote access. Plex justified the move as necessary to allocate resources toward enhancing personal media playback capabilities, including new features and improved user management tools for subscribers.
