Apple is set to enhance its Podcasts app by transitioning to the company's HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) technology. This update, currently in beta, will be rolled out this spring alongside the new 26.4 operating systems across various platforms, including iOS, iPadOS, visionOS, and the web.
The switch to HLS allows for a more versatile user experience, enabling seamless transitions between video and audio content. Users will also benefit from offline download options for both formats, which were not available with the previous streaming methods that relied on an RSS-like feed. Additionally, the app will feature a horizontal full display mode and support for picture-in-picture multitasking, particularly on devices like the iPad.
Furthermore, the updated application will automatically adjust video quality based on network conditions, enhancing playback whether users are connected through Wi-Fi or cellular networks.
