The Android TV platform is undergoing changes as a new “Free” content tab is introduced, replacing the previous “Discover” tab. This update aims to enhance user experience by allowing access to free movies, shows, and channels all in one location. The change was noted by Stephen Schenck from Android Authority, who observed an update on an older Android TV projector.
The new tab features sections tailored to user preferences, including “Top free picks for you” and “Top 10 in the United States free with ads.” While the rollout details are not fully clear, this update appears to reflect a shift towards promoting free content amidst a declining number of active Android TV devices. Furthermore, many users may be opting for third-party launchers or external HDMI devices over the built-in software.
Earlier this year, Android TV made modifications to its homescreen, moving recommended content from the “Discover” tab to the main interface, indicating ongoing adjustments to improve user engagement. This latest update aligns with that trend as Google continues to evolve its television offerings.
