Vitalik Buterin, a co-founder of Ethereum, introduced a proposal on Saturday aimed at simplifying the process for Ethereum node runners, also known as validators. This initiative seeks to merge the backend programs that facilitate communication with Ethereum’s Beacon Chain and its execution layer into a single code structure, potentially easing the technical burden associated with running a node.
Currently, validators must manage two distinct programs, which complicates synchronization and data coordination. Buterin emphasized the need to democratize node management, stating that operating one's own Ethereum infrastructure should not be an intimidating task reserved for experts. He criticized the notion that high hardware requirements justify a steep barrier in technical and time commitments, asserting that "nodes should be easy" for everyone.
This proposal comes against a backdrop of growing concerns regarding the centralization of Ethereum, as the complexity of running a node often drives users towards third-party services. Buterin's earlier suggestion in May 2025 to implement partially stateless nodes aims to further alleviate these issues by reducing both hardware and data storage needs for individuals wishing to participate in the network.
