The English-language edition of Wikipedia has taken the significant step of banning the website Archive.today, following evidence that it directed a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack against a personal blog. The site reportedly manipulated archived webpage snapshots to feature the targeted blogger's name, escalating the attack against engineer Jani Patokallio over the course of a month.
According to reports, since January 11, Archive.today included a JavaScript component that caused visitors' browsers to open Patokallio's blog in the background, triggering extensive DDoS activity. Such attacks aim to overwhelm a website's resources with excessive traffic, potentially leading to significant disruptions or complete outages.
In response to these actions, Wikipedia editors reached a consensus to blacklist Archive.today, aiming to prevent any redirection of its users to a site known for hijacking computers. Moving forward, Wikipedia plans to not only remove all existing links to the site but also implement measures to block new additions.
